New solo Viola piece published

Schott Music has just published a new work by Garth Knox. ‘Homage to Ysaye’ is a three movement solo piece for viola inspired by Ysaye’s Sonatas for solo violin. Dedicated to Hana Gubenko, who gave the first performance, it is soon to be scheduled for several major competitions.

Graduation for Doctor of the Arts

Garth has just obtained a doctorate at Middlesex University in London, an ArtsD, and attended Graduation Day to receive his diploma. His thesis, entitled Stretching the String, deals with Extended techniques in string playing and explains the thinking behind his Violin Spaces and his string quartet, Satellites.

Scottish Performer of the Year 2019

Garth Knox has been awarded the prize for Performer of the Year by the Scottish New Music Awards. His recent performances in the Sound Scotland Festival in Aberdeen and first performances of new Scottish pieces earned him this honour and he was presented with a trophy at a ceremony in Glasgow.

Garth Knox will  also be giving public masterclasses at the RAM in London on 4th March, at the Royal Conservatoire in Birmingham on 5th and 6th March, and at the RNCM in Manchester on 8th April.

 

New Piece with Harry Patch Instruments

As part of a residence at the University of Washington, Seattle, in May 2018, Garth Knox wrote and performed ‘Crystal Paths’ . This piece mixes the unique sounds of five  of the original Harry Partch instruments with the no less unique sound of the viola d’amore. You can read a review of the first performance here.
